Biotechnology in Context for High School Students

This was true for Watson & Crick, for the Human Genome Project, as it is for the modern COVID researcher or technician working in the lab today. Starting with a simple DNA extraction we have a wide array of tools, techniques, and processes that allow us to learn much more. These techniques include: DNA Electrophoresis - separation of DNA fragments by size, Restriction Endonuclease - using an enzyme that cuts DNA at specific recognition nucleotides, PCR - polymerase chain reaction - generating millions of copies of a particular DNA sequence, ELISA – Enzyme- Linked Immuno Sorbant Assay – used in medical diagnostic testing, Bioluninescence – used to follow a gene in living cells. can be used to edit genes within organisms CRISPR - Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats - can be used to edit genes within organisms These, and other techniques, form the foundation of the new science of molecular biology that is revolutionizing our understanding of life itself. Breakthroughs and new techniques are providing basic understanding in biology, a new view of health, medical diagnostics and treatments, chemical analysis, agricultural applications, and research. Many believe that development of these techniques are breakthroughs equal to the greatest scientific applications of the past and will lead to greater economic development and prosperity for our society.
